Journey So Far

A Century of Educational Eminence at Majuli Auniati Hemchandra Higher Secondary School

In an era when educational enlightenment, particularly in English, was predominantly confined to religious facets in Majuli, a significant void existed for the local children. The absence of English educational institutions left the youth of Majuli without access to this crucial knowledge. Acknowledging this disparity, the late Keshavram Bora, a dynamic social worker, lifelong educator, and an ardent advocate of beauty, undertook a mission to introduce English education in Majuli. Later the school was named after then Satradhikar of Auniati Satra Sri Sri Hemchandra Goswami who came to support this noble cause and helped financially to bring this dream into reality.

Foundation and Founding Figures

Established in January 1924, our School owes its existence to the tireless efforts of Keshavram Bora, who collaborated with local luminaries such as Betharam Bora, Chandradhar Tamuli, Maguram Neog, and others. These scholars, along with assistant teachers like Dambaru Hazarika and Bankiram Thakur joined hands to lay the foundation of an institution that would withstand the tests of time.

Journey through Adversity

The school's journey has been marked by resilience against natural disasters, relocations, and unforeseen challenges. From its humble beginnings in Bangaon, Kamar Gaon to the banks of the Tuni river and later the historic Raona Pond, the school has faced adversity head-on. Noteworthy is the fire that devastated the dormitory in 1933, prompting a shift to Kamalabari, where the local Namghar generously served as a temporary teaching space.

Building Foundations, Literally and Figuratively

The construction of a new building in 1937, made possible by the support of Somdhar Barua and the Satradhikar of Auniati Satra, marked a pivotal moment. Initially hesitant, the Satradhikar played a crucial role in laying the groundwork for a permanent structure.

Landmark Events and Academic Excellence

Overcoming obstacles, the school witnessed landmark events. In 1940, a decision to merge the middle and upper branches led to the formation of a Board of Directors. The school’s first matriculation exam in 1949 set the stage for a legacy of academic excellence. Despite challenges like the devastating earthquake in 1950, the school emerged stronger, aided by community support and government assistance.
